Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid will go on sale in the first half of 2012
Toyota has announced the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid will go on sale in the first half of 2012, priced at less than £31,000.
With the Toyota Prius retaining its 1.8-litre petrol engine, the enhanced hybrid drive train is set to deliver exceptional fuel economy and emissions without any of the all-electric alternatives’ range anxiety, while undercutting the forthcoming Vauxhall Ampera by £3,000.
The exact efficiency figures are yet to be officially homologated, but Toyota is confident the Toyota Prius Plug-in will return 134.5mpg on the EU combined testing cycle while emitting just 49g/km CO2.
This gives the Toyota Prius Plug-in an electric-only range of over 14 miles – compared to the current car’s 1.5 mile electric max – while the continuing presence of the petrol engine means you should always be able to find somewhere to refuel.
Toyota Prius Hybrid’s combination of 1.8-litre petrol engine and battery power, plus its full recharge time of an hour and a half, should help hurdle the major EV consumer barrier of range anxiety and flat-battery-panic. The latest in the line of best-selling Toyota Prius cars can cover up to 14 miles in pure EV mode. Usefully, both from a consumer and PR perspective; Toyota are actually testing their economy claims with the new Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid being assessed in real-world demonstration programmed with 200 prototype Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles in Europe – 20 of them in London. Prior to official homologation, Toyota predicts Prius Plug-in Hybrid will emit 49g/km of carbon dioxide and achieve 134.5mpg combined cycle fuel economy. Tokyo Motor Show: VW Cross Coupe Plug-in Hybrids Concept
Volkswagen introduced a cross-coupe concept today at the Tokyo Motor Show. , Plug-in hybrids and looks like a traditional four-door coupe and an SUV gets together on the design center.
VW's first to feature 'modular transverse matrix' new, whatever it was, and looked pretty much production ready. Looks like a big enough engine on the image, but actually shorter than the Tiguan.
The car will feature plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.4-liter gasoline engine with 148bhp 1TSI two electric motors, one in front and one rear axle, developing 54bhp and 114bhp respectively. When used in combination, there are a total output of 261bhp is offered, which allows the car accelerate 0-62mph in 7.0sec and reaches a top speed of 125mph respectable. Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid To Market in 2012
Volvo has confirmed that it will bring the Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid to market in 2012.
All other hybrids sold come with gas engines. The 2012 Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid has an estimated range of 1200 kilometers or 750 miles. At Volvo Car Corporation, work on the V60 Plug-in Hybrid progresses in parallel with development of the Volvo C30 Electric, which a runs entirely on electricity. The third leg in Volvo Car Corporation's electrification strategy is empowering the upcoming engine generation with hybrid technology.
The future electric-car market will feature a mixture of both all-electric cars and plug-in hybrids. The rear axle is powered by an electric motor producing 70 horsepower. The compact battery pack of the 2012 Volvo Plug-in Hybrid consists of 10 modules with 20 cells in each module. The interaction between diesel and electric power is handled via a control system. In hybrid, the diesel engine and electric motor interact to provide the optimal balance between driving pleasure and low environmental impact.
Developed in partnership with Swedish utility company Vattenfall, the new Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid promises mileage of 124 mpg on the slightly more generous European combined cycle when equipped with a diesel engine. The turbo diesel engine drives the front axle and the electric motor drives the rear, meaning the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid is also an all-wheel drive vehicle.
“No industry or organization can tackle the climate challenge all by itself. It is our mission to develop carbon dioxide-lean cars, but it is the society that is responsible for creating a sustainable future. This project shows how cooperation between experts in different areas brings us closer to the transition from individually carbon dioxide-lean products to a climate-smart lifestyle,” says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.
“With a plug-in hybrid the driver is entirely independent of recharging stations when driving long distances. The future electric-car market will feature a mixture of both all-electric cars and plug-in hybrids,” says Stefan Jacoby.
